May 6 through May 12 of every year is recognized internationally as Nurses Appreciation Week. The movement to designate a national recognition in the United States for nurses was formally accomplished in 1982, under President Ronald Reagan. Since that time, the observance week has ended on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The theme for this year’s observance is, “Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow.” As we all know, Florence Nightingale was a British nurse who was well-known for her work during the Crimean War. During that time, she earned the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp”: “When all the medical officers have retired for the night and silence and darkness have settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds.” OCEA respects the contributions of our Nurse members, who in many ways are following in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale.
If you come to OCEA during Nurses Appreciation Week, tell the receptionist you are a Nurse, and you will receive a small token of our appreciation.
