OC Public Works

On March 18, 2008, the Board of Supervisors announced the creation of a new department, OC Public Works.  OC Public Works consists of the Department formally known as RDMD, minus OC Parks.  Specifically, OC Public Works consists of Flood Control, Highways, Facilities, and Planning.

OC Public Works is the Department that is responsible for public facilities, community development, and construction throughout the unincorporated parts of the County and for cities that contract with the County for services.  The employees of OC Public Works make sure that our infrastructure is maintained and our quality of life is fostered.

OCEA-represented employees in OC Public Works come from all of our bargaining units and cover a diverse range of jobs.  Geologists, Engineers, Information Technology Technicians, Secretaries, Inmate Supervisors — you name it, and OC Public Works has it.  It is in large part the hard work of OCEA members that gives Orange County the well deserved reputation of being one of the nicest places in America to live.

OC Public Works employees were instrumental in coordinating efforts during the 2007 Modjeska Fires in South Orange County.  OC Public Works employees were responsible for helping to coordinate civilian assistance and infrastructure maintenance during the County emergency.

OC Public Works employees also manage the development of unincorporated areas of Orange County, monitor the health of Orange County’s Watershed system, protect citizens from floods, and even make sure that state-mandated agricultural regulations are being met.  While this is only a snapshot of all of the wonderful work OCEA's members do for OC Public Works, it shows how diverse and important this Department and its employees are.

What is an MOU? It's a "memorandum of understanding"—another name for a collective bargaining agreement!
