County proposes huge compensation and benefit cuts
Dear OCEA member,
The following slides show the salary and benefit cost reduction measures that County Supervisors adopted yesterday as part of their five-year strategic plan. As you can see, the plan includes salary reductions, limiting step increases, a hiring freeze, limiting annual leave payouts, and proposed changes to your pension benefits. The County acknowledges that many of these proposals would require labor negotiations and legislative changes, and that could incite legal challenges.
Still, the County CEO said that all cost-reduction avenues "are a target we're aiming for." He urged the county to “be resolute in pursuing all of those (proposals), including the legal angles."
The county’s timing in pursuing cost reduction options remains unclear, and we will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for your interests. We are going to be facing the most difficult challenges we’ve ever encountered in coming months. It's imperative that we approach this with unity, intelligence and commitment. To that end, we will continue to increase our communications with you about what’s happening. It’s critical that you get plugged in by reading these emails, forwarding them to your coworkers and remaining engaged. We also urge you to join our Facebook community, at facebook.com/oceamember to get up-to-the-minute updates about news and events that affect you.
It is going to get tough, but we can weather this storm if we remain unified and dedicated. We are equally resolute in fighting to protect your interests and security.
